Strollers, Puppies and Kids, OH MY!

Grrrr. Woof, Woof. Bark. Sniff. Grrrr. Bark, Woof.

For those of you who don't speak fluent canine, that means, "The Tech THETA 'Speak Up for Kids' CASA 5K is for EVERYONE, even pets!"

CASA 5K is for pets....
Runners and walkers alike are encouraged to bring their favorite four-legged friend to participate in the 5K. This is a great way to exercise your dog, while having fun and meeting new doggie friends at the same time!

CASA 5K is for kids and families...
Why not make the CASA 5K a family event? There is a way for people of any age to participate. Moms, feel free to bring along your stroller for a run or a leisurely walk. Your baby is sure to love the ride and fresh air! There will also be a Kid's K, which is a one-mile fun run for kids. You can cheer your child on as  they run with other kids from the community. Training as a family is a great idea, too!

CASA 5K is for serious runners...
For all of you serious runners out there, the CASA 5K offers chip timing. Come run with CASA and compare your speed against other serious runners or strive for a new personal best time!

If you're using the training schedule that CASA found, here is what you should be doing for the rest of the week:

Thursday, Feb 25: walk 30 minutes
Friday, Feb 26: rest
Saturday, Feb 27: walk/run 3 miles (or as far as you are able)
Sunday, Feb 28: rest or walk for 30 minutes
Walkers, on walk/run days, walk only. Runners, run for 15 seconds, walk for 45 seconds.

Get Involved With Our 5k!

I hope your first day of training for the Tech THETA "Speak Up For Kids" CASA 5k was as successful as mine. I'll admit, the last 10 minutes were pretty rough, but after I was done I felt great! And even though there's snow on the ground, I'm looking forward to my training session today.  In fact, as soon as I'm done with work I plan on bundling up with lots of layers to go walk outside. For those of you who aren't as fond of cold weather, there are still ways to complete your 30- minute walk. I know the Texas Tech Rec Center has great facilities and good price rates, so that you can walk on a treadmill or an indoor track. Or, just do 30 minutes of cardio excercise. For example, you could jump rope, do jumping jacks or swim.

Don't be discouraged if you missed yesterday's scheduled walk/run, just pick up today or whenever you are able!

If you're following the training schedule that CASA found, today you are scheduled to:

WALK FOR 30 MINUTES

Tomorrow, you are scheduled to:

RUN/WALK FOR 30 MINUTES
Runners, run for 15 seconds, walk for 45 seconds.
Walkers, walk for 30 minutes.

If you aren't able to run or walk in our 5k, there are still way for you to get involved. Consider helping out by donating a $20 scholarship so that a CASA kid can participate in this event. This is a great opportunity for CASA kids to participate in something that promotes positive physical activity. Running can also, be a wonderful way for our CASA kids to relieve the stress and turmoil they are experiencing as they wait for their forever home, so think about donating today!

Come Run with CASA

It's that time of year again... CASA's annual Tech THETA "Speak Up For Kids" CASA 5k is approaching. This is a wonderful and fun event which raises money so that we can train new volunteers and help more kids.

Here at the CASA office, things are rolling right along as far as planning is concerned. The location and date have been set, now all we need is YOU! That's right, YOU! Whether you are a serious runner, casual walker or a couch potato, we're inviting you to come out and join us for this great cause. With your help, we will truly be able to make a difference in abused children's lives and help get them the safe home they deserve!

For all of you couch potatoes out there (such as myself), there is still plenty of time get ready for the 5k, 7 weeks and 2 days to be exact. So to help you out, CASA has found a 7-week training schedule. We will be posting a week-by-week version on our blog, but if you prefer to see the schedule in it's entirety, click here. With this schedule, you will be race ready in no time!

So take a breather while you can, because if you are using our training schedule MONDAY is your first day!
Here is what you should be doing for the week of Monday, Feb. 22-Sunday, Feb. 28:

Monday, Feb. 22: run/walk for 30 minutes
Tuesday, Feb. 23: walk 30 minutes
Wednesday, Feb 24: run/walk for 30 minutes
Thursday, Feb 25: walk 30 minutes
Friday, Feb 26: rest
Saturday, Feb 27: walk/run 3 miles (or as far as you are able)
Sunday, Feb 28: rest or walk for 30 minutes

Walkers, on walk/run days, walk only. Runners, run for 15 seconds, walk for 45 seconds.

I am not an avid runner, so just to prove to you that we're all in this together, I plan on training with you! I mean, why not? It's good for my health (mental and physical), my dog will absolutely love it and I'll be helping out a great cause at the 5k. Oh, and I'm sure I will have some good stories about my adventures in training to share with you, so be sure to regularly check our blog for updates and to share your training stories with us!

See you out there!
